An overturned vehicle is causing massive queues on a stretch of the M1 between Milton Keynes and Milton Keynes on Wednesday afternoon.

Highways England reported the incident just after 2.30pm and quickly warned of 90-minute tailbacks on the northbound side between Newport Pagnell Services and Junction 15 for Northampton.

Northamptonshire Police reported the crash involved a red VW and a truck. The VW finished up on its side although, remarkably, neither occupant was injured.

A spokesman for the agency said: “There is approximately five miles of congestion and currently delays of 1½ hours against expected traffic.

“We do not anticipate a return to normal traffic conditions until between 16:30 and 16:45. Please plan your journey and consider alternative routes if possible.”

Delays are also being reported on the A5 northbound between the junctions with the A422 and the A508 as drivers struggle to find a way round the tailbacks.

Drivers heading southbound on the M1 also face delays on Wednesday afternoon as a broken down vehicle is blocking one lane between Junction 17 and Junction 16.
